    Canon Character Section:
History: Isabela @ Dragon Age Wiki

As Isabela is a companion character to a malleable protagonist of Dragon Age II, Hawke, the decisions made by the player in-game and their interactions with the companions affect their outlook on the Hawke character as well as the quality of their relationship. Decisions and specific details to the way I play Isabela are:

  • Hero of Ferelden was an elf mage. Isabela met them at the Pearl in Denerim and taught their companion the Duelist specialization. No threesome with anyone. :C
  • Friendly relationship with (a female!) Hawke, romance negotiable if ever we get a f!Hawke in-game.
  • Isabela has a change of heart and returns to Kirkwall with the Tome of Koslun at Act II quest "Demands of the Qun"; Hawke doesn't hand her over to the Qunari but duels the Arishok for her life instead. Isabela stays with Hawke's crew until the conclusion of the events of DAII.
  • Hawke sides with the mages in the epilogue quest, and leaves Kirkwall shortly after the conclusion that ends in the deaths of Grand Enchanter Orsino and Knight-Commander Meredith.
  • Isabela parts ways with Hawke and the others at the end of Dragon Age II and returns to the Raiders to pick up her pirate life, which is what she's doing during the events of Dragon Age: The Inquisition. She now calls herself Admiral Isabela -- likely another self-appointed title.

  • Personality:
Every crew needs a scoundrel with a hidden heart; Dragon Age II has Isabela, the Queen of the Eastern Seas. Self-appointed title as though it is. Lewd, witty and very much the devil-may-care type, Isabela often comes across as a cheeky, superficial flirt who cares about little else but sailing the seas, treasure, drinks and a good roll in the sack, but that's all on the outside. She may not be the most tactful or educated person, but she has seen and lived through a lot, has a decent moral code underneath it all and drops surprising pearls of wisdom in a casual party banter. But though her own hide usually comes first to her and she has a streak of selfishness to her, she doesn't shy away from a fight and she sticks by those few that she considers friends. She's as awe-inspiring with a dagger as she is with biting one-liners, intimidating and seductive in equal measure. Mostly, she's just living it up and looking for the next bit of amusement wherever she goes -- and the next bit of booty. Either kind.

Sold into a loveless, exploitative marriage by her own mother at a young age after refusing to convert to the Qun -- a strict code of honor, a philosophy, a set of laws, a legislative guide, and a social architecture governing the lives of the Qunari race -- molded an independent, willful woman out of Isabela when finally freed of said marriage by an advantageous assassination of her husband. There is some lore discrepancy on whether or not Isabela contracted the assassination herself. She claimed control of her late husband's ship and took up the life of piracy, free of any obligations and restrictions that didn't suit her. She was finally free to do more or less as she pleased, and she relished every moment of her new life with a wholehearted zeal.

Isabela never pretends to be something she isn't. She's the first to admit she's a lascivious wretch, often making pithy comments about her personality and conduct that sometimes confuse or puzzle those around her. She's very self-aware like that, but also self-confident; she has a way of sauntering into every room like she owns the place. When asked doesn't it bother her when people brusquely or rudely brush off her advances, she responds with, "Why should it? They don't know me. I know me." No insult or off-colored comment seems to stick with her, for she simply doesn't care to be defined by anyone else's perception of herself. She also actively encourages people, often very bluntly, to take a more proactive role in their own lives and to take chances even despite the risk of failure. Even if it doesn't work, one can always dust themselves off and try again. Regardless, one's richer for the experience of having tried in the first place, no matter the outcome. She proclaims she doesn't feel any guilt herself over the many mistakes she's made in the past, for Isabela is a believer in "Our mistakes make us who we are". And while that is true in most cases, there are instances in her past she deeply regrets. It's just easier to look forward than to dwell on it all, and Isabela enjoys uncomplicated life.

Isabela's less than ideal marriage left her fearful of commitment, favoring casual physical encounters over honest feelings. Her late husband exposed her to emotional and sexual abuse both, but that isn't what left her nervous about romance. She's a survivor, a strong woman who rose above it; Isabela isn't afraid of getting hurt again herself. She's wary of hurting someone else by being unable to give herself fully to that other person, unsuited to being tied down. Her marriage also left her with absolute loathing toward anyone displaying overtures of distasteful possession of another person, and she doesn't tolerate abuse -- of women, especially -- of any sort. She's the first to advocate women's rights, defending and encouraging them however she can. She takes Merrill, a hopelessly naive, young female elf and a fellow companion, under her wing. She encourages, tauntingly as though it may be, for Aveline to take a more dominant role with her husband in bed. Isabela may be promiscuous, but that most definitely shouldn't be mistaken as submissiveness or feelings of inferiority. She knows what she likes, enjoys sex and makes no apologies for it.

Isabela delights in a little bit of deviousness and cleverness in all dealings, responding well to people who, like her, value fun and maybe making a bit of profit on the side. Preachy, overly righteous or prudish types and people who insist on going out of their way to do the right thing will usually get her to roll her eyes, as will needlessly butting into other people's affairs. Live and let live is often Isabela's motto, unless you threaten her or those she cares about. In that case, all bets are off and you'll get a dagger in the face. Despite her general joviality, she can also be cagey and evasive, secretive even, on some issues, only revealing what is necessary in order to stay ahead and in control. A lot of her colorful past is a mystery, and Isabela would rather it remains so. She can be a difficult woman to please, for she's easily bored, often restless and prefers not to stick around in one place for too long if she can at all help it.

For all that Isabela is a pirate and a scoundrel, she has a good heart and a fairly working moral compass. She cheats at cards, but doesn't accept a trinket with significant sentimental value as a prize out of the game. She actively steals and engages in looting across the seas, but smuggling slaves is outright wrong in her eyes; she sets the slaves free knowing it will incur the wrath of the man responsible for setting up the shipment, choosing instead to remain in his debt than to take this on her conscience. She doesn't show up for a dinner party at Aveline's because she recognizes she's so far below Aveline's station (who is the guard-captain of Kirkwall's city guard) and worth she'd somehow sully Aveline's reputation and that of her house by association, despite frequently taking pleasure in taunting and riling Aveline up whenever they travel together with Hawke. And most notably, she returns to Kirkwall with an important tome she'd herself stolen earlier after a change of heart when she could have made off with the tome, knowing that returning could put her life at risk -- once you've gained her confidence, she can be ridiculously loyal, even to the detriment of her own well-being. Not bad for a pirate, is it? But she never wants the fact that maybe she's not as selfish as she lets on be acknowledged aloud, of course. She does have a reputation to keep.

Being from the country of Rivain, Isabela is not Andrastean like so many others in the world of Thedas are. She has little attachments to anything, it seems -- religion, family, etc. -- but the sea and the constant longing to feel the waves under the hull of a ship. Though she appears unconcerned or uncaring on the major issues going on in Thedas at any given time, she does have her opinions on them. She just often chooses to keep them to herself. Her worldview in general can be a little jaded, or at the very least strictly realistic; she deals with things as they are rather than what they could become, usually able to see both sides of any major question. All in all, Isabela knows the world isn't a kind place, especially to women, and sometimes you have to fight to get your dues. One thing she's learned well during her life of piracy is that one has to be twice as tough and work twice as hard to earn half as much respect as men do. She makes the hard calls when necessary and is capable of being quite ruthlessly mercenary, but she also knows that there is a time and place for such.

She spent several years in Kirkwall, shipwrecked and landlocked; efficiently trapped. Teleios will be another sort of prison to Isabela, though perhaps one that offers a bit more variety than Kirkwall did. She adapts easily enough, though she won't like the fact that she's once again without all the means of plying her beloved trade, without a ship to sail. Considering magic is a staple element in Thedas, most of the strangeness going on in Teleios won't bother her overmuch. She'll also be happy to run into the pre-existing Dragon Age crew in Teleios, for they've had recent dealings with both Hawke and Varric -- important people to Isabela -- and will be able to tell her how they're doing. Teleios might have enough for her to entertain herself on most days, but she can't change her basic nature. A pirate is a pirate, and chances are that she'll wrack up more debt frequently enough by stealing things. She'll definitely be a familiar face in any of the bars, preferring anywhere with lots of hard liquor as her natural habitat -- right after a deck of a ship, of course. The scuzzier the bar, the better. She'd probably move into one of them if allowed.

She'll also wonder where the hell are all the brothels in this place, hello? Talk about an injustice.

Powers/Abilities: Isabela is a rogue, a character class in most RPG series who are typically experts in sneaking around, picking locks, poison-making and wielding either a bow or dual weapons. Isabela's weapon of choice are two daggers, and she's extremely fast and proficient with them. She considers herself a duelist, a self-appointed classification; in other words, she's honed her skills for several years by dueling people, earning special focus and accuracy on top of her speed that makes her a deadly adversary on the battlefield. Like any rogue in the DA series, she favors stealth and melding into shadows to fool her opponents and to better stab them in the back -- fairness in a fight is a matter of no consequence to a rogue. She isn't above using dirty tricks like exploding miasmic flasks that stun enemies or poison-coated blades. To summarize: Isabela is a very skilled fighter with fluid, lightning-quick movements, possesses knowledge on poison-making and has deft hands when it comes to picking locks and disarming traps. Beyond that, she's a baseline human with no discernible extra powers. Unless that ridiculously ample cleavage of hers counts.

I swear I didn't have this much to drink. I think. [ So mumbles one dubiously dressed Rivaini pirate making closer acquitance with the great hall's floor as she slowly comes to. With a long groan, she slowly pushes herself upright, the long-suffering mutters continuing. ]

Oh, what have you gotten youself into now, Isabela? Why is it always me? [ Why not Hawke? Stuff like this was right up the Champion's alley. Dusting off her already stained chemise, Isabela takes stock of herself. Nothing broken, always a plus. This seems like an oddly painless waking up, anyway, which hasn't usually been Isabela's experience. But the reassuring weight of her daggers at her back is gone, which quickly causes a bolt of fear-laced ire to lance through her. They've taken her weapons! She hisses a softer curse under her breath, before exploding more loudly; ]

Andraste's left---! [ She cuts herself off in a rare moment of self-censure as a child -- at least Isabela thinks it's a child, not hairy enough for a dwarf -- happens by, finishing lamely and entirely without heat, ] ...armpit.

[ She feels naked without her daggers. And while naked is a state she's rather used to and actually prefers, a lot of times, this is a different sort of naked she doesn't care for one bit; it's making her antsy. She doesn't need weapons to defend herself, but they do help the matter. Cocking her hip and rolling her shoulder, Isabela adjusts the buckles of her wristguard while golden eyes cut shrewdly across the crowd, surveying her surroundings. ] So. A room full of people with no idea how I got here. Were we all naked, this premise might have some merit to it.

[ She chuckles lowly at her own line, but underneath the jokes is annoyance and confusion. She wants back what was taken from her -- it's rude to steal from a pirate. ]

"You can't see it, but below deck is a perfect replica of you-- with a dozen sailors in attendance."

Isabela had laughed and teased back mock-coyly, fondly amused, at the impromptu little gift Hawke had given her all those years ago back in Kirkwall; a miniature ship in a bottle. Shit, that seems like a lifetime ago to Isabela now, being landlocked in the Free Marches, passing her days hanging by the bar counter in the middle of glorious, filthy mess that was the Hanged Man tavern in Kirkwall's Lowtown. Whenever Hawke wasn't dragging them all off on some misadventure or another, that is.

Now, it's been well over a year since she parted ways with Hawke and the motley crew of the other companions. A little less since she last saw Varric on that nasty business involving the Qunari and King Alistar. She tells herself this is the way it should be; the sway of her own ship as she cuts through the waves under her feet, the spray of the surf on her face and the scent of salt clinging to her hair and skin. The helm under her hands is a tangible comfort; only she decides which way they take next. In control of her own fate, once more. These are the things that truly soothe her soul, and none others. This is what she'd craved for all those years after losing the Siren's Call to the storm and the Qunari dreadnaughts at her heels that left her stranded in Kirkwall to begin with. She tells herself she doesn't miss having to scrub bandit blood and abomination guts from her clothes every second hour, but she knows that's a lie.

Some days she does rather miss it. Quite a bit. Not so much the bloodied clothes, but the thrill of the fight and the feeling of being a part of something that was, whether she admitted it or not, just as good as being a part of a ship's crew. The camaraderie they shared. She missed Hawke. Varric. Little Merrill. And shit, she really missed Aveline and her put-downs. How silly can one be to miss that?

It's funny. Isabela's never been one for sentimentality, but she still has the tiny bottle with the even smaller ship in it.

"You've finally gone soft, you stupid goose," she mutters to herself with wry distaste, shaking her head as she takes in another breath of the fresh sea air. A moment later, she pushes off the railing and heads for her quarters, intent on a quill and some blank vellum. She still has her sources, and Varric must have some news to tell her.
